Simula na ng “Brigada Eskwela” o ang annual school maintainance week ng DepEd. Ito ay ginanap sa Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, kasabay ng mga iba’t ibang public schools sa bansa.

“The Philippines is the biggest country, if not, the only country in the world that gathers and prepares the schools for the coming school year.” said Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC to the volunteers of Numancia Central Elementary School (CES) in Siargao Island. He also said that the invitation to help out in schools is “extended to all volunteers who are willing to contribute their time, effort, and resources for the preparation of public schools.”
Ang “Briagada Eskwela” ay mula May 18 to 23 at may temang “Tayo Para sa Kalinisan, Kaligtasan at Kahandaan ng ating mga Paaralan”. Sa week na ito, nananawagan ang DepEd ng mga volunteers na maaring tumulong sa repainting ng classrooms, repairing ng school furniture at cleaning ng school grounds sa public school malapit sa inyo.

Maari ring magdonate ng mga school supplies sa tinatawag na “Learner’s Kit” para sa estudyante.
O kaya naman magdonate ng supplies para kay teacher sa tinatawag naman na “Teacher’s Kit”.
Hinihikayat din ni DepEd Sec. Luistro ang lahat ng OSY’s o Out of School Youths ages 15 to 30 na mag-register sa “Abot-Alam Program” booths na matatagpuan sa local na paaralan. Ang “Abot-Alam Program” ay para lamang sa mga (1) hindi nakapagtapos ng basic or higher education, (2) hindi enrolled sa school at (3) hindi enrolled sa Alternative Learning System program.

Ayon kay Dr. Eden Deriada,Chief, Education Support Services Division of the Department of Education 6, ang programang ito ng DepEd, kasama ang National Youth Commision ay ginawa para mabigyan ng quality education at access sa iba’t ibang government programs at services ang mga OSY’s. Sa ngayon, ang “Abot-Alam” ay nakatala ng 1.9 million OSY’s nationwide at mula sa 1.9 M nabigyan ng intervention ang 412 000.
