Iba na at hindi na ang food pyramid na unang ipinakilala noong 1990s ang nirerekomenda para sa healthy eating — ito ay ang Healthy Plate o mas kilala as tawag na “Pinggang Pinoy”.

Ayon sa Food and Nutrition Research Institute o FNRI, ito ang mas madaling sundang food guide to show the right and proper proportions ng pagkain natin per meal everyday.

Ang tamang division ng food ay makatutulong para ma-meet ang tamang energy and nutrients na kailangan ng ating katawan.

Ang Pinggang Pinoy ay visual tool at para na rin ma-manage ang effective dietary and heathy lifestyle nating mga Pinoy.

Pinggang Pinoy:

  • Rice – 33%
  • Vegetables – 33%
  • Meat – 17%
  • Fruit – 17%

Ang message ng Pinggang Pinoy:

  • Kumain ng variety of foods araw-araw para makuha ang nutrients ng katawan.
  • Makabubuti rin ito sa breastfeeding moms dahil magkapag-bibigay rin ito ng complementary foods for infants.
  • Damihan ang fruits and vegetables for essential vitamins, minerals and fiber.
  • Kumain din daily ng fish, lean meat, poultry, eggs for repair of body tissues.
  • Ang gatas naman, milk products, at calcium-rich foods ay makabubuti sa buto at ngipin.
  • Siguraduhin ding sapat ang water intake, tulad ng recommended na at least 8 glasses of water daily.
  • Limitahan din ang salty, fried, fatty and sugary foods para naman maiwasan ang cardio-vascular diseases.
  • Kasabay ng pagkain ng healthy, kailangan ding maging physically active, avoid alcoholic beverages and don’t smoke para maiwasan ang lifestyle-related diseases.

Noong 2013 National Nutrition Survey, 1 sa 10 adults ay chronically energy-deficient at 3 sa 10 ay overweight and obese.

Noong 2008 naman, na-estimate ng WHO na 300,000 ang namamatay kada taon sa non-communicable diseases — katumbas ito ng 800 deaths/day.
