Health: Reading problem in kids may lead to bad behavior

Sa movie na Abakada…Ina na pinagbidahan ni Lorna Tolentino nung 2001, grabe ang panlalait sa character ni Lorna na si Estela ng biyenan, mister, at pangalawang anak niya.

Hindi kasi marunong magbasa si Estela kasi she had to stop school at an early age.

Estela is an example of the many Filipinos who are considered “no read, no write” for whatever reasons.

Some had to work at an early age.

Others had vision or hearing problems.

Others have a learning disability, gaya ng mga may mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, etc.

Pero what is surprising is kids who seem normal and attend regular school naman, but are having difficulty reading na pala.

Reading and behavior

Iba’t iba ang reasons kung bakit may reading problems ang otherwise normal students.

Pwedeng hindi nila ma-recognize yung tamang combination ng sounds that make up a word.

Pwede ring hindi nila maintindihan ang meaning ng certain words or combination of words in a sentence kahit may context clues naman.

Detection & intervention

Bukod sa pagbabago ng ugali, pwede ring gamiting basis ang “kiddie milestones” ng isang bata to assess if he or she has a reading difficulty.

If he or she doesn’t perform a skill na dapat ginagawa na ng kids his or her age, that may be a red flag.

Ayon sa counsellor na si Jaclyn Gatbalite, “As soon as parents observe that their children are not displaying developmental milestones during the early years, they must get professional help in order to validate or consult about the possible implications of their observations.”

Ideally, dapat nang ma-assess ang bata bago pa siya mag-elementary school.  After that age kasi, mahirap nang baguhin ang mga natutunan niya sa school that may make it difficult to teach him the correct skills.

Isasailalim sa maraming test ng isang reading specialist ang pinagsususpetsahang may reading problem, para malaman kung ano ang mga kakailanganin para ayusin ang problemang ito.

“Reading specialists deal with their behavior as well as their cognitive needs at the same time.  This is not only challenging but takes away or lessens the time that must be spent for the intervention,” ayon kay Gatbalite.

Success rate

Prevention talaga ang solusyon para hindi mahirapan sa school at eventually, sa buhay, ang bata.

Hindi kasi makukuha sa isang upuan o ilang session lang ang pag-correct sa reading problems.

Pero hindi dapat mawalan ng pag-asa ang mga bata at mga magulang nila.

“For some, it may take several programs in order to address the needs.  For others, life-long guidance may be needed.  One thing, however, is for sure: these children can be given help in varying lengths and degrees,” according  to Gatbalite.
